This is was great! The Italian guys from Privat Party invited us over to Milan (Italy) for realising a true special: Kandel, Fresh Meat and Robosonic playing all night long in a very special club location, all broadcasted live as video and audio stream via ShoutedFM. We hooked up a second mixer and made live interviews on the gig, check out the recording above! REVIEW BMI vs. BKI @ Milan

Friday 24 april:

6:00: Sacha Robotti aka ½ of Robosonic gets up, brushes teeth, gets dressed, packs stuff, rushes down to the cab where Cord Henning Labuhn aka ½ of Robosonic is already sitting with tired eyes and a smile. Same procedure as usual!

6:30: Nice turkish cab driver stops at the bakery so the Berlin Kreuzberg Institut can get some Croissants & Börek (which will stay in the bag til Sunday, half-eaten)

7:45: Meeting the Berlin Mitte Institut at Schönefeld airport. Excitement is in the air. The Ryanair staff is surprisingly friendly. At the check-in, the BMI (Matthias Kandel aka Kandel & Jan Kühn aka Fresh Meat) have to switch on their laptops to prove they didn’t turn their machines into bombs.

8:45: “Goode morninge laydiese anda gentellemen thissise youre captaine speakinge”. Lovely airplane speakers. No turbulences. The alps look beautiful!

10:15: Touchdown in Milano / Bergamo, out of there pretty fast as we only have handluggage.

10:20: Meeting our driver Conni, supernice guy, 40minute ride into the city.

11:00: Drop off our stuff at Fausto’s (organizer of Privat Party with Oliver) in Milan centre. Fausto has a small cosy place you have to access through a midget door into a courtyard. It’s gonna be BMI & BKI’s home for two days.

11:30: Meeting Fausto & Oliver accross the street in a café to drink a Cappuccino and plan the day.

12:15: Food at the place where Conni’s girlfriend works. Lasagna, Pasta with Salmon, Chinotto, Cappuccino. Yummy!

13:00: Pier from Milan-based DJ duo Radio Marelli takes BMI & BKI to the Radio Popolare studios on the outskirts of Milan. Radio Popolare is a left-wing FM station broadcasting in the whole of italy. We got 15 minutes on air and are very late.

13:30: BMI & BKI get interviewed by a fast-speaking sympathetic Italian. We’re talking about the BMI & BKI concepts, about the “East and the West thing”, about partying in Berlin and why we love what we do. The language barrier makes Robotti talk most of the time in his (semi-)fluid Italian. The radio guys play an 90s-sounding breakbeat song and falsely announce it as a “BMI track”, which we find very amusing.

14:00: Another Cappuccino and a talk at Radio Popolare with Pier and Claudio from Radio Marelli. Ride back to town centre.

15:00: We’re facing technical problems, as the guy who was supposed to get the internet running at the party location “Spazio Maderna” so that we could stream the whole evening live on web tv never showed up. Fausto found a replacement in the shape of a USB mobile phone card internet connection, which at least permits to stream Live Audio. We all hope it will work when 1500 Italians are dancing at the location and sending SMS.

16:00: Cord & Kandel chillout at Fausto’s place, while Robotti & Fresh Meat drive off to the location to soundcheck.

17:00: The “Spazio Maderna” party location is a big industrial hall in an industrial area with a massive soundsystem. Barely any party lighting, no visuals, just plain concrete, metal and later on the crowd. Rave 1.0, it’s going to rock. The sound is super loud and bassy. Fresh Meat hooks up his mic and gets the mobile internet running, it all seems to work. We go back to Fausto’s. The italians drive well, but fast! In his next life, Conni will be a rally driver.

18:00: After a brief trip to the supermarket to get everything a DJ needs to survive a night of hard work, it’s siesta time for BMI & BKI at Fausto’s. Some of us try to sleep while others show off their Traktor system, causing the obvious “Vinyl vs. CD vs. Digital-DJ” talk.

20:00: Shower, get dressed, pack stuff, smoke a cigarette. Waiting for Conni – who we’re supposed to meet at 21:15 to go to dinner but who is instead spending quality time at the police station to claim that his car papers were stolen.

21:30: Oliver calls a cab and gets us over to “Don Gio”, the number one pasta place in Milan. We have salty bruschettas with anchovies, red wine, killer pasta with chicken, sausage, tomato sauce, and of course a couple of strong Espressos as desert. Feels like home!

23:30: Arrival at “Spazio Maderna”. Radio Marelli play warm-up, place fills up. Free entry, just the drinks cost a little more. Fresh Meat starts to interview people and is in his element like a fish in the water.

00:30: Kandel & Fresh Meat tag a little, place is packed by now, people have their first drink.

01:00: Robosonic take over, place is more packed by now, we’re slowly turning up the volume.

01:30: Crowd starts to go mental. Suddenly Fausto runs up telling us the police is at the door heavily equipped and threatening to close the place as too many people are inside (1500) and too many people are standing outside trying to get in (2500).

01:45: We have to slowly turn down the volume. What a pity as we were ready to drop some bombs. 1500 Italians start to sing football-type songs as well as “turn the volume up”, and are coming up to the DJ booth to ask what the hell is wrong. Think I repeated “scusa ma la polizia ci ha detto di spegnere la musica” about 100 times.

02:00: Lights on, music out. Damn! Everybody leaves the place. The bouncers look solid. We’re packing our stuff, smoking a cigarette, saying “sorry sorry” to the remaining crowd. Fausto & Oliver say “sorry sorry” to us and blame it on the owner of the location who apparently didn’t talk to the cops before the party. They invite us to do this party again in a safe location in the upcoming months. Stay tuned!

03:30: We all meet at Amnesia club, where Jeff Mills is playing extremely hard techno… party on…!
