style="text-align: justify;">A short history on this: In 2009/2010 we did two live shows with Florian Meindl broadcasting the production of a techno track live on webTV for the first time – the result is the track “The Way it Took us”. Since that was such a big success and well accepted by our public, we decided to make a remix contest and enable the chosen remixers a remix-release on Flash Recordings.

This release is the result of a project from Florian Meindl in corporation with Berlin Mitte Institut (Fresh Meat & Kandel) and Soundcloud. The aim was to show a full production process live on TV and audio-stream and get feedback and suggestions live from the audience. It was an experimental approach because nobody knew where it would lead to and the interaction between unknown people in the audience and the producer (Florian) lead to an unpredictable result. The project used modern technologies like a live TV stream, live audio stream, live chat and all features within Soundcloud like a group and comments on the timeline of the delivered remixes.

The project began with Florian producing a track within 8 hours live at Berlin Mitte Institut, where over 10.000 listeners could get involved in the actual production process with questions and ideas. The video stream was completely overloaded and the project was viewed more than 30.000 times on the live stream and afterwards onYoutube. It has been a full success and it was the first time such a project happened.

The result is an clubtune with big strings called “The way it took us”. Because of the success of the project, the makers decided to do a remix contest via Soundcloud in order to see how people would reinterpret Florian’s work. After a month there have been 196 submissions from all over the world, from which 8 were selected by Florian, Fresh Meat and Kandel.

Review the full production process here and leave your thoughts Hier habe ich eine Hausarbeit über sogenannte "Hipster" auf Skribd gefunden.

We received 196 submissions, which is amazing! Thank you for investing your time fot this project. We knew the selection process would be hard, and yes, it was a pain! We had to drop good remixes because of the sake of a suitable release which follows the concept of FLASH. At the end we decided on the most suitable remixes. We took more than we planned to take and we will release them digitally first. If the sales are good and would recoup a vinyl production we will press a vinyl of the four best selling tracks on the release. The winners are contacted, their tracks will be mastered and soon released on FLASH. More info coming soon From the first few seconds of the synthesizer sound on Florian knew, this remix is going to be interesting. In his opinion its an amazing tripping tune which fits perfect on many occasions.

The real strength of this remix is located in the lower part of the frequency spectrum. This work needs to be enjoyed on a soundsystem providing sufficient bass. The groove is generated through the kick, bass and rhythmic melody cuts. This will work on the club dancefloor. RICARDO did not care too much about the original melody, it's all about rhythmic and groove here.

This is the dancefloor weapon for Florian here. He knows Fabian already from a former release he had on his label, Ihewas surprised that he delivered a remix, but everybody was welcome to take part so it was a nice surprise, especially because he delivered an awesome club tune with a mindblowing straightness and oldschool piano chords! This remix is the one which will get a place in the peak time slot of Florian's dj sets. Powerful and strong, but still kind of deep and cool.

ECKBRECHT took a bit of a risk, he completely changed the tempo, rhythmic and sounddesign. The rough metallic sounds he used were assembled a single feeling or moment of time, carried by the soft melody pads. Florian did not think of a style or genre while listening to this work, I was just thinking of a moment of time somewhere. Outstanding work!

David Noel, a co-founder of Soundcloud recently interviewed me for the remix-contest we are doing together with Florian Meindl and Soundcloud. On this interview I actually outlined the current concept of the Berlin Mitte Institut for the first time, and here it is:

Tell us a little bit more about the project, how did you got to team up with Florian Meindl for this project?

The Berlin Mitte Institut seeks to produce radio and WebTV shows that touches upon new things. The radio landscape in the techno scene mainly focuses on dj mixes, or inviting big names to your radio show. In the end, everybody does the same: One more radio show or dj mix to listen to and download. But we want to take the new democratising technologies a bit further and produce content, which has not been done before and also is of special cultural value. You can see this on our shows. We broadcast live track productions, as well as focusing on topics that are normally not covered by the usual techno press. We also produce shows explaining the correlations of booking agencies and the techno scene, along with shows that pin point the relationship between the techno scene and its distributors.

Our next show will be a live broadcast from a Berlin club featuring 8 live interviews, which will be put together as a Youtube Doku playlist. We will interview people from professions go more unnoticed (waiters, technicians, runners, bouncer, night manager etc.), yet are vital to the the club functioning as a whole. We always try to connect the promotion of our guests through our channels with the connection to interesting topics that under the surface concern the techno scene.

We sometimes also produce label (eg. Minus, Bpitch, Get Physical) shows in-between, as this is good way of outreach forbigger audiences. Last year we had a Stil vor Talent showcase with Florian and quickly found out, that we have common interests: Techno and social media. I hit him up asking, if he wants to do this live production show. From one show (creating a loop) we made a second one (arranging the loop) and since the public response is so good, we added a remix competition to involve the users even more, create a productive dialogue between fans and us. We also planned to make a live mastering show sometime soon with a special mastering studio here in Berlin.

How did the production process go? What did you guys use to get the track ready and how did SoundCloud came into play?

The production process lasted two shows–all together eight hours, four hours per show. We produced in our living room studio on a mac, special monitor speakers and a good soundcard. The listers and viewers were always live with us, following what Florian does and take part in the process via chat. All shows, including the final track, are hosted on SoundCloud, so that other people can listen to, download the show to their mobile music players and follow it after the live show has happened.

How does SoundCloud help you as a radio show? How do you guys use the service?

We host our recordings on SoundCloud, to make them accessible to everybody, who could not follow the live show. People can listen to it, share and download it to there mobile music players or computers. We also use the groups function now for the remix contest. Soundcloud basically is the central archive, that our fans use to listen to our shows whenever and wherever they like.

Is our response to music hard-wired or culturally determined? Is the reaction to rhythm and melody universal or influenced by environment?

The article provides a structural description of the work situation of club culture DJs. This description should convey an impression of the DJ’s work seen from the perspective of the DJ himself. This intention is consistent with the concern of ethnography of imparting an idea to actors how other actors (or groups of actors, as the case may be) perceive the world (that is, the sections of the world relevant for them). As this description of the stage conditions under which the DJ works is one element in the larger mosaic of a long standing research into the club culture, it is part of an ethnographic exploration of life in youth scenes generally. Ethnography of scenes aims to achieve a perspective as though seen through the “eyes” of the actors in lieu of the pseudo-objective “overview” of the conventional social sciences that sweeps over the actors’ heads. In doing this it can be shown that the DJ in the club culture has to act in a specific manner that differs from the performance of a disc jockey on the one hand or a hip hop DJ on the other; although the participants of club culture events idealize the DJ as an actor who is completely free in his decisions, he has to act as an artist who realizes his concept of party music and who furthermore has to act as an artisan who orients his action to the wishes of his clients. Only with this mixture of artistic behavior and service orientation the club culture DJ is competent to make a “good” party.

Download + Stream: New Releases Show (Live WebTV,7pm CET, 12.10.09)

blog

Dates: - Parties, Shows, Streams

Download WebTV and Radio Shows

Radio and WebTV Shows

fresh meat

kandel

live webtv

new releases show

After 2 months of absence for holidays and girls the Berlin Mitte Institut returns for the new Techno season with new shows. Just like last year we are trying to get more in to the direction of a "culture show", which means: Not just showcasing music and promoting artists and labels, but combining promotion with the presentation of background knowledge in an authentic and "feel good" environment. We are starting of with our "New Releases Show" on the 12th of October. There are many more shows planned, like a BLN.FM, danke!) sich beim Netaudio Festival-Berlin produktiv die Hand.
