Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman and Novamute Records
Richie Hawtin is a highly influential artist, DJ and producer in the field of electronic dance music (henceforth EDM). One of his main recording identities Plastikman released his first album ‘Sheet One’ on Novamute Records, the EDM subsidiary of Mute Records in 1993.
Through describing Richie Hawtin’s relationship with the sublabel, the aim of this study is to highlight his important role in the development of Novamute. In fact, Plastikman’s musical identity with its individual minimal and acid techno style had a powerful impact on the popularisation of the independent label in underground music scenes. The article proves this fact by summarising Richie Hawtin’s scene-based activities and with the help of a historical and cultural retrospective of the Plastikman releases.
Through a short genealogy of Novamute, we will try to draw correlations between Plastikman’s abovementioned activities and Novamute’s popularisation. For that, we initiated an email interview with Seth Hodder, one of the founders of Novamute Records.
In the theoretical background of this study, two concepts play central roles: the concept of music scene (Straw 1991; Bennett 2004, Bennett and Peterson 2004) in order to describe the scene in question (techno/Detroit techno) and Kühn’s (2011, 2015, 2016) new model of ‘scene economy’ to highlight Plastikman’s roles in Novamute’s cultural and economic activities. Many young DJs dream of playing in clubs, living from their DJ gigs, playing in their favourite clubs and traveling not only through Germany but also around the world. After a few years of unsuccessfulness, however, there is a certain disillusionment among many of them. The bookings do not come in, in social networks hardly anyone shares their mixes or releases.
In this workshop, we will discuss the causes, explain the Do’s & Don’ts as well as established success strategies, bust myths, explain best practices and expectations that will help you to get into the clubs.

Anschauen!
„The Art of Listening is a documentary film about the journey music takes to reach a listener’s ear, from the intent of an instrument maker and composer, to the producers and engineers who capture and preserve an artist’s voice. This journey is narrated by intimate conversations with artists, engineers and producers about the philosophy of their work and the intent behind each musical note they create.
This film is an invitation for music fans to rediscover the intricacies and details available in the sounds of their favorite recordings. The Art of Listening is the beginning of a conversation of how the quality of our listening experiences define the medium.“

Saturday night, 3 AM. The floor is full, house music is pumping, everybody is dancing. Two girls enter the DJ booth and ask for certain track names from popular producers (Can you play xxx or xxx from xxx, or do you have anything from Paul Kalkbrenner, Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin ..) or even worse: Ask for Madonna, Jay-Z or Birtney Spears. As a dance music DJ you simply ignore or try to get rid of them. The girls are disappointed, think you are an ass and pretty arrogant, but whatever. It's not your fault! They simply don't recognise the difference of discotheque (DJs are jukeboxes there indeed) and clubs (here they are artists). The GRRR angry DJ explains all this, although he himself seems to rather belong to the discotheque sphere (In another video he talks about playing birthday tracks and 50 Cent 🙂 But I love the way he does it, and I want producers to sample him.
