Many young DJs dream of playing in clubs, living from their DJ gigs, playing in their favourite clubs and traveling not only through Germany but also around the world. After a few years of unsuccessfulness, however, there is a certain disillusionment among many of them. The bookings do not come in, in social networks hardly anyone shares their mixes or releases.
In this workshop, we will discuss the causes, explain the Do’s & Don’ts as well as established success strategies, bust myths, explain best practices and expectations that will help you to get into the clubs.

Thomas Cyron and Matthias Hermann recently wrote a master thesis about the implications of authenticity for cultural entrepreneurs. He was so kind to make it public to you via the Berlin Mitte Institut blog. Below you will find a short summary, and at the bottom the full thesis to read and download. His conclusion is: ‘To conclude, we believe that an authentic career in underground electronic dance music is a long-term process. What it comes down to is the motivation one has to start a career. If you quickly want to earn a lot of money, this study will probably not provide you with the knowledge to do so. However, if your motivation is to create and stay true to yourself, and you’re in it for the long run, you might find the paper interesting.’ Have a good read!
In our master’s thesis with the title Authenticity in Cultural Entrepreneurship: Implications for self-branding culturpreneurs in the electronic dance music industry, Thomas and I explore the subculture of electronic dance music from a marketing and entrepreneurial perspective. The focus is hereby put on the interrelation between (1) cultural entrepreneurship, (2) personal branding, and (3) authenticity.
In short, cultural entrepreneurship can be seen as the entrepreneurial actions undertaken in order to contribute to a certain culture. What mostly characterizes cultural entrepreneurs is the lack of financial capital and thus the reliance on alternative forms of capital, such as social and cultural capital. Personal branding is usually used from a human resource perspective. Here, however, it is considered as the brand that one builds around a persona. The concept of authenticity is accentuated as we believe that it not only plays an essential part in the formation of the subculture, but also in the preservation of it. (Read more…)

So wie es aussieht hab ich die Dissertation btw in ein paar Wochen fertig, und werde sie dann nach der Disputation auch als Open Access ins Netz stellen, so die Planung. Wie schon damals die Diplomarbeit.
